Securing and maintaining federal dollars for key programs is often a top priority for organizations, yet it is also one of the most daunting tasks. It requires careful planning, good timing, great contacts with key players, thorough knowledge of the budget process, and, above all, perseverance. Whether the federal budget is in surplus or deficit, competition for funds is fierce, necessitating a strong voice and consistent presence for your organization's priorities.
The Sheridan Group has an outstanding record of winning and keeping federal funding for our clients. For more than a decade, the Communities Advocating Emergency AIDS Relief (CAEAR) Coalition worked with The Sheridan Group to increase funding for Title I and Title III of the Ryan White CARE Act, the federal government's major response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In that time, CARE Act funding for Title I and Title III increased over 600% and 330% respectively. In addition to the CAEAR Coalition, other clients for whom The Sheridan Group has successfully increased federal appropriations include One Voice Against Cancer, a coalition of more than 40 public interest groups.
Occasionally, The Sheridan Group takes on short-term appropriations projects for clients that have a compelling need. Community for Caring, a leading character education organization with a focus on students with disabilities, called upon The Sheridan Group for assistance in obtaining federal funds to expand its national program. The Sheridan Group provided advice and assistance on obtaining an earmark through the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations bill.
The Sheridan Group secured a witness slot for the International Myeloma Foundation at a Senate Labor, Health, and Human Services and Education Appropriations subcommittee hearing on cancer research. The testimony allowed the Foundation to highlight the importance of research funding to patients facing less common forms of cancer.
