Bookshare for Education

Benetech has gained international recognition as a leading provider of technology for people with disabilities, for human rights groups and for organizations managing environmental projects.  Jim Fruchterman, Benetech’s founder, is a rocket scientist by trade and was awarded the prestigious MacArthur Genius Prize in 2006 in recognition of his work as a pioneering social entrepreneur. One of Benetech’s leading innovations is Bookshare, the world's largest accessible digital library of scanned material for people with vision and reading disabilities.  In 2007 Benetech successfully competed for a 5-yr, $32 million award from the Department of Education to provide free access to Bookshare for all students with a qualifying print disability.

The Sheridan Group is working with Benetech to educate policymakers on the organization’s high-impact innovations and to advocate for competitive grantmaking. Benetech consistently surpasses benchmarks and out paces competitors. The Sheridan Group also works with Benetech to promote open-market solutions, encouraging publishers to meet the needs of all students.
