Eradicating Global Poverty

Eradicating Global Poverty

Backed by a movement of 2 million members, ONE achieves change through advocacy. ONE holds world leaders to account for the commitments they've made to fight extreme poverty, and campaigns for better development policies, more effective aid and trade reform. Working with Bono and Bobby Shriver, The Sheridan Group has provided political strategy for Debt AIDS Trade and Africa Foundation and now ONE since its inception.

From the passage of PEPFAR in 2003 to the G8 Gleneagles $25 billion pledge in 2005, ONE has been on the leading edge of unprecedented U.S. global health and development investments and policy reform. As a result of those programs, today nearly 4 million Africans have access to life-saving AIDS medication, up from only 50,000 people in 2002. Malaria deaths have been cut in half in countries across Africa in less than 2 years and 42 million more children are now going to school.

The Sheridan Group partnered with ONE to help ensure the Cardin-Lugar  Extractive Industries Transparency Amendment was included in the Financial Reform Act in 2010.

Thanks to existing and emerging scientific innovations, ending AIDS in our lifetime is now achievable. On World AIDS Day, at an event sponsored by RED/The ONE Campaign, President Obama committed to providing more than 1.5 million HIV-positive pregnant women with antiretroviral drugs to prevent them from passing the virus to their children.

The President also committed to provide more than 6 million people with antiretroviral treatment by 2013--two million more than their previous goal. Regardless of the electoral shifts and the increasing influence of money in politics, we continue to see well-positioned organizations like ONE achieve a remarkable return on their advocacy investment – in both human and financial terms.

Results To Date Include:

President¹s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)

Global Fund for AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis

Access to lifesaving antiretroviral treatment for more than 3.9 million people

HIV testing and counseling for more than 9.8 million pregnant women

Prevention of 200,000 infants being infected with HIV
